The construction industry is unique in that teams assemble, from a variety of organisations to deliver a project and then disperse to commence new ventures. All too often the "learning points" are lost meaning that future projects do not benefit from the innovative ideas generated or fall into the same traps and encounter the same problems. This causes frustration, delays and detracts from the value being delivered.
Many organisations, recognising this problem, have a paper-based system of project reviews which, once completed, never see the light of day again - being relegated to filing cabinets and not being easily accessible by new teams.
There is a real opportunity to add value to the works being delivered by ensuring that learning points are widely disseminated and acted upon. This will lead to continual improvement and increased motivation within the Teams - as they see their ideas being of lasting benefit.
(a) Effective facilitation of project reviews
An external facilitator ca effectively manage and record the results of regular project reviews. These should not solely be focused on technical innovations - but should include how the team has worked together, contract process and communication issues.
(b) Introduction of knowledge management processes
Through our close collaboration with Ovic Limited, which provides IT solutions to the construction industry, we have jointly developed a web based knowledge management system that makes "learning points" readily accessible to everyone in the delivery process. Ideas and review reports can be easily up-loaded and a search facility ensures that information on specific topics is easy to locate.
